The following links aim to direct users to Internet resources within Wales on the Web that may be of use to the teaching of Personal and Social Education in schools.

Many websites include material that has been created for use in schools, or provide information about facilities that cater for school visits. These websites have an education icon at the bottom of the resource description. Websites without an education icon also often contain valuable material.

Many PSE topics are inextricably linked and therefore many topics overlap sections within this guide.

The Young people section of Wales on the Web provides websites and forums specifically for young people in Wales. Many of these websites contain information relevant to the PSE curriculum in Wales.


Physical Aspect

The physical aspect of PSE focuses on health promotion, physical fitness and the importance of food safety. It promotes the notion of keeping yourself in good health and safe in the physical environment and looks at the dangers associated with alcohol, drugs and smoking.

  • Promotion of health
    Many sections of Wales on the Web contain websites relating to health promotion. Many health promotion websites cater specifically for schools. They include 'Health Promoting Schools', 'LifeBytes', 'The Room' and 'Mind, Body and Soul'. There are also health promotion websites from various parts of Wales including 'Bus Stop' (Conwy), 'Healthy Schools' (Denbighshire), 'Pembrokeshire Health Promoting Schools Project' and the 'Cardiff Catering' website on reducing child obesity.
  • Weight loss
    This section provides access to resources on obesity and healthy eating such as the BBC's 'Big Fat Problem'.
  • Physical fitness
    Wales on the Web contains many physical fitness websites including initiatives from the Sport Council for Wales set up to increase and promote the profile of women and girls sport and encourage higher participation.
  • Alcohol (health), Alcohol (social welfare)
    Two sections of Wales on the Web highlights the problems associated with binge drinking and alcohol. Many websites look at the harm done by drinking too much and lists many services in Wales that help those with alcohol problems.
  • Smoking
    This section contains access to a number of resources highlighting health problems associated with smoking.
  • Drug education
    There are a number of drug education websites within Wales on the Web such as 'Talk to Frank'. There is also access to a number of services throughout the whole of Wales established to help those suffering from drug abuse and to highlight the dangers of drug use and addiction.
  • Food safety
    Many resources now exist and provide advice and information to the public and the government about food, nutrition and hygiene.
  • Public safety initiatives and Criminology
    This section provides access to a wide range of resources on public safety, crime prevention and on making our communities a safer place to live.
  • Sport and recreation
    There are hundreds of links within Wales on the Web on all types of sport and recreational activities. There are also sections on dance and aquatic sports in Wales.
  • Cycling, Walking
    There are also a number of walking and cycling resources within Wales on the Web. Of particular interest is 'Safe Routes to Schools', a sustainable transport charity that encourages people to walk, cycle or use public transport to travel instead of a car.

Sexual Aspect

The sexual aspect of PSE promotes safe sex and for individuals to take responsibility in their sexual behaviour. This section primarily focuses on the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases, of the availability of different methods of contraception and of the law relating to sexual behaviour.

  • Sexual health
    This section is for websites on reducing teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and safer sex procedures.
  • HIV/AIDS related illnesses
    This is for websites offering support to those who are HIV+ or suffer from AIDS and on campaigns to halt the spread of HIV and AIDS in the UK.

Environmental Aspect

The environmental aspect of PSE raises awareness of the world's environmental problems and of the notion of Sustainable Development. It encourages responsible use of the environment and provides information about how minor changes in your daily life can make a difference to the global environment. Sustainable Development is using resources in such a way that it does not affect the needs of future generations, and ensuring that an area sustains its cultural or natural significance. The National Assembly for Wales has a binding legal duty to pursue Sustainable Development and is one of only three bodies in the World that has the promotion of Sustainable Development built into its constitution.

  • Environment and sustainable development
    This is an educational guide on sustainable development and the environment in Wales created specifically for the Curriculum Cymreig. The guide is also relevant for Personal and Social Education and explores renewable energy, recycling, saving energy and outdoor environmental centres in Wales.

Community Aspect

This section is for resources on community regeneration, multicultural issues, racial discrimination and citizenship in Wales. It will provide you with an opportunity to explore and appreciate cultural diversity and discover more about the many nationalities and religions that co-exist in Wales. This aspect of PSE also focuses on Active Citizenship and a need to play a wide role in society. It also emphasises the need to appreciate and understand all cultures in Wales and the notion of living in a democratic society. The notion of equal opportunities is promoted within the community aspect of PSE including the importance of valuing the cultural heritage of Wales and its multi cultural dimension. It also looks at the structure of government in Wales and the importance of political dialogue, expression and participation.

  • Online communities
    Wales on the Web has a listing of many community websites from all over Wales reflecting many aspects of community life. It is possible to compare life in different localities throughout Wales through community websites, gathering information relating to life in villages from Anglesey to the South Wales Valleys and every area in between. The 'Capture Wales' website from the BBC also allows people to tell their stories in a new way, using the tools of multi-media production.
  • Community development
    Community regeneration is also high on today's agenda in both rural and urban Wales. The community development section has access to many websites relating to community regeneration initiatives in all areas of Wales.
  • Welsh language
    The cultural heritage of Wales is unique and bilingualism is an integral part of our society. This section provides access to a variety of resources relating to the Welsh language and bilingualism in Wales. There are resources on the history of the Welsh language and of the many opportunities in Wales available for those who wish to learn the language.
  • Racial and ethnic groups
    There are a number of groups in Wales tackling racism and promoting a multi cultural Wales. This section of Wales on the Web includes access to these groups and contains resources on community groups in Wales such as Somalis, Yemenis and those from the Caribbean and Central Africa.
  • Ethnic minorities: services
    Wales on the Web has access to many ethnic minorities support services in Wales and the UK.
  • Other nationalities and groups in Wales
    This section contains a variety of resources including those on Armenians, Palestinians, Poles and Gypsies in Wales.
  • Refugees
    Many websites provide services and information for asylum seekers and refugees in Wales. These services exist in order to improve their conditions and to improve public understanding of refugee and asylum issues.
  • Religions of the world
    Many religions co-exist in Wales. This section contains access to resources on Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam and the Baha'i Faith.
  • Elderly, Disabilities, Community psychology, Learning difficulties
    Wales on the Web has many websites providing information and services for many groups of people. These sections should provide an overview of the problems associated with these groups of people in leading a normal way of life. They also promote the notion of equal opportunities, raise awareness and develop an attitude of respect and acceptance.
  • Homelessness
    Wales on the Web has access to many homelessness websites and services in Wales. Examples include 'Shelter Cymru' and the 'Housemate' website, set up to explain the housing problems faced by young people.
  • Citizenship
    There exist a variety of resources covering Citizenship in Wales. They include 'Cyfanfyd', 'Council for Education in World Citizenship (CEWC) Cymru', 'Cultural Explosion', and their attempt to create new ongoing linkages (especially with young people) between Wales and the ten new member states of the European Union (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta). This section promotes the understanding of the contemporary world.
  • Civil and political rights
    This section has resources from pressure groups in Wales that promote civil and political rights in Wales. They include Welsh language pressure groups to groups that promote equality for women, racial groups, those with disabilities, and for lesbian, gay and bisexuals across the UK.
  • Political science, Public administration
    Two sections of Wales on the Web explore politics and the democratic society that we live in. Many websites provides an overview of democracy in Wales and provides access to websites of your local representative (AM, MP and MEP).
  • Political science: young people
    This section looks at political resources created specifically for young people, to encourage political dialogue and participation in the political process. Resources include 'Heads Up' (from Hansard Society), 'Funky Dragon' and the 'Wales Youth Parliament'.
  • Elections
    Relevant resources include 'Y Vote 2005', as it contains resources and teaching material that will enable your school to create a mock election. The website has a section specifically for students in Wales. Participation in the democratic process to most of us involves voting at elections. The 'About My Vote' website has been designed to help people find out everything they need to know about voting and the democratic process for them to be able to get involved. The section also contains resources that explain the democratic process in Wales.
  • Public safety initiatives and Criminology
    These section provides access to a wide range of resources on public safety, crime prevention and on making our communities a safer place to live.

Vocational Aspect

The vocational aspect of PSE looks at the changing world of work, and also raises awareness of work related matters. This section contains a wide range of resources providing advice and services about making informed choices on learning and careers and to prepare for life in the work place. There are also resources on the impact of new technology, as well as sections within Wales on the Web that has information about the different types of jobs and careers that exist in Wales.

    The Careers section of Wales on the Web provides access to numerous careers websites from Wales that provide excellent careers education and guidance. Of particular interest is the 'Careers Wales' website which provides careers guidance and information on work related education.
  • Work related education
    This is for business-school partnerships and work related education.
  • Vocational education and Occupational training
    Wales on the Web contains a variety of resources on vocational and occupational education and the changing nature of work in Wales.
  • Education for social responsibility
    This is for initiatives and resources emphasising and promoting the concept that learning is for all in Wales.
  • Job vacancies, Trade Unions, Pensions, Taxes, Unemployment
    There are also a number of sections of Wales on the Web relating to the life of work and employment issues in the UK.
  • Lifelong learning/Adult education
    This is a listing of lifelong learning initiatives.
  • Consumer advice
    This section provides access to quality consumer advice services that operate in Wales. Consumer advice websites also provides advice on money and financial matters and on buying and selling.
  • ICT: Information and Communication Technology
    ICT plays an integral part in many aspects of our lives. This section provides a variety of resources on Information and Communication Technology from new and modern initiatives to basic training.

Emotional Aspect

The emotional aspect of PSE focuses on managing your feelings and emotions. There are many areas of Wales on the Web with resources on resolving conflicts and negotiating agreement, bullying and coping with bereavement.

    This section is for mediation services in Wales. These services can have a direct impact in preventing, managing and resolving conflicts.
  • Bullying
    Bullying takes in many forms and is prelevant in all aspects of our lives. The Bullying section provides access to resources that provide information and support on the subject.
  • Bereavement
    This is for resources and services for coping with bereavement.
  • Victim support
    This section contains access to resources and services to help those who would like to cope with the effects of crime.
  • Domestic abuse
    The Domestic abuse section of Wales on the Web provides free and confidential information and support services to those affected by domestic abuse.
  • Child abuse
    Management and delivery of child abuse services in Wales has recently been under the spotlight as a result of a number of recent high profile cases, both in the UK and Wales. This section has a number of resources and support services to those affected by child abuse. The section also contains access to 'Childline', which is a free 24-telephone helpline for children suffering from abuse in Wales.

Learning Aspect

The learning aspect of PSE concentrates on improving learning performance and contains a commitment to lifelong learning and the development of new and key skills that are essential in a rapidly changing environment.

  • ICT: Information and Communication Technology
    ICT is plays an integral part in many aspects of our lives. This section provides a variety of resources on Information and Communition Technology from new and modern initiatives to basic training.
  • Literacy
    Many initiatives and bodies are dedicated to and promoting literacy in the UK. They work in partnership with others to enhance literacy standards in the UK through reading promotion. This section of Wales on the Web provides a listing of some of these bodies.
  • Grants: further education, Grants: higher education
    Many grants are available to those who wish to continue their education in further and higher education in Wales.
  • Electronic distance learning
    The development of electronic distance learning allows students to study in their own homes, whilst fully supported by their college. It is a field new to education but also one that is rapidly developing. This is a brief overview of opportunities that are currently available in Wales.

Moral Aspect

This aspect of PSE promotes a stable and ordered environment and one that contains shared values, respect, honesty and responsibility. This section focuses on bullying, road safety and public safety initiatives in Wales.

Spiritual Aspect

Many school communities in Wales include pupils from many faiths such as Christianity, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh. A collective worship approach is undertaken to develop a respective attitude to all religions in Wales. This section draws on many religion resources within Wales on the Web and provides a basis to obtain background information on the many religions that co-exist in Wales.

  • Funky Dragon
    Funky Dragon - the Children and Young People’s Assembly for Wales - is a peer-led organisation. Our aim is to give 0 – 25 year olds the opportunity to get their voices heard on issues that affect them. Funky Dragon’s main tasks are to make sure that the views of children and young people are heard, particularly by the Welsh Assembly Government, and to support participation in decision-making at national level.

  • Children and Young People: Welsh Assembly Government
    The Assembly Government works with local government, the National Health Service and voluntary organisations to achieve the aims of helping young people in Wales fulfill their potential and giving children in Wales a better start in life and supporting vulnerable children. On these pages you will find information on what the Assembly is doing to achieve these aims including an index of topics, a list of publications and details of the Funky Dragon and Children First initiatives.

  • Canllaw Online
    Canllaw Online provides information on education, employment, training, health, housing, law & rights, money, sport & leisure, and the world in general. The website is aimed at young people starting in life, and provides help and advice on most issues likely to affect young people. There are also a number of useful links that would be of interest, and relevant contact information. The website also has a news and focus section in which it explains the issues of the day.

  • Safe Routes to Schools
    The Safe Routes to Schools programme is run by Sustrans, a sustainable transport charity that encourages people to walk, cycle or use public transport to travel instead of a car. School Travel Plans, events, news, a resource library and, in the Welsh section, several case studies relating to the project in Wales can all be found on the website.

  • Clic Online
    Clic Online is being developed by Careers Wales Association and is a national information and advice service for young people in Wales. The service provides 11-25 year olds with access to a wide range of bilingual online information, covering ten different topics including health, education, relationships, housing, sport, money and the law. Its aim is to provide a one stop shop for all of this age group's information needs.

  • Key Skills Cymru
    Key Skills Cymru objective is to 'help practitioners in training providers, schools and colleges to improve the quality of key skills provision and to support the preparation of young people for the key skills qualifications'. Key Skills Cymru is funded by the National Assembly for Wales and provide wide range of high quality support and training services. The Key Skills Cymru website provide information on events and conferences, managing key skills in Wales, student support and a listing of development projects that allow schools and colleges to explore new or improved ways of delivering and accrediting Key Skills.
