This section provides access to digitised 'old maps' of Wales.
Old Maps
Old Maps provides online access to Britain's most extensive digital historical map archive which is jointly owned by Landmark and Ordnance Survey, Britain's national mapping agency. The archive has access to maps of Wales and the UK from over a hundred years ago and are viewable online. The archive has a search engine in order to locate place names, or a county gazetteer that shows a list of place names which exist in individual Welsh counties.
A Vision of Britain through Time
This website provides a vision of Britain between 1801 and 2001, including maps, statistical trends and historical descriptions. It includes information about places throughout the UK, including Wales, that can be searched by post code, place name or an interactive map. It also includes census reports, historical mapping and travellers' tales.
Digital Mirror: Maps
The resource contains digitised copies of old maps from the National Library of Wales. It is part of their Digital Mirror collection. This section has digitised version of:
- Thomas Taylor Atlas of 'The Principality of Wales' described in 1718 as the first published atlas relating entirely to Wales
- Charts of the Welsh coastline by Lewis Morris (1701-1765) and his son, William.
Collect Britain
Collect Britain presents 90,000 images and sounds from the British Library. Many of the British Library holdings have been digitised and are availbale to view online on their Collect Britian website. Items of Welsh interest include within their collection include many Early maps, Atlases and Ordnance Survey Drawings of Wales.
Gathering the Jewels
Gathering the Jewels has digitised many maps. Items within their collection include the Ordnance Survey Public Health Maps of Merthyr Tydfil, 1851.
